so we've been gutting away on the road for a few weeks now, having played with the likes of Miami Horror, Wolf & Cub, The Protectors etc.. so heres a taste of what's been going on.. a live review from our last trek to south oz..

Melbourne’s Red Ink took to the stage next and pulled in the punters with superb indie rock. Once you see these guys live you understand why the buzz behind them continues to sky rocket. Blistering guitars and thumping bass lines duel for supremacy as Josh Jakubenko’s sublime voice rises above the driving drums that encapsulate all that is right with this four piece. Putting on an energetic and lively performance, with Jakubenko’s hypnotising vocal strains and stage presence leading the way, it is the well crafted tunes that really make Red Ink stand out from the crowd. New single Battlescars has a very British feel with a fantastic sing along chorus while set closer Audrey leaves you feeling sweaty, euphoric and just a little guilty, much like a one night stand. Red Ink are the real deal and deserve the success that is surely on its way.

A muggy Melbourne night at the Ding Dong Lounge, licking your chops at a veritable smorgas board of local talent with Red Ink topping the bill. What better way spend an Australia Day Eve, we ask you?

Unfazed by the serious partying to be done the following day, punters flocked to Ding Dong early on to soak up an energetic set by Mercury White with their piano-inflected brand of indie rock. Honourable mention goes to their generous use of the keytar, always a sight to behold.

Boasting a more extensive list of exotic instruments were Melbourne’s favourite crockery-inspired folk act, The Good China. The troupe whipped out banjos, ukuleles, xylophones, maracas and even a melodica at one point during their delightful set.

Less about extraordinary instruments and more about extraordinary heads of hair was third act for the night, Neon Love. Hot hair and the vocalist’s striking resemblance to Prince aside, Neon Love kept the standard of local talent on show pegged high. With a sound that deftly bridges pop/indie rock/post punk divides these four boys from Ballarat are well worth keeping an eye out for.

Headliners for the night, Red Ink, then took to the stage. Sporting an Aussie-flag T-shirt with the words Blame On! scrawled in black texta, charismatic vocalist John Jakubenko said a few quick hellos to then kick off a set that literally swept the crowd up off the Ding Dong dance floor.

With vocals that swoop and soar over steady layers of pop-rock rhythms and spikes of ska-like guitar riffs, Red Ink certainly know how to weave a soundscape that envelops a crowd and leaves them literally buoyant.

Kleptomaniac starts off dark and punchy but then forks off into dreamy interludes, only to pull you back into the same driving pop beat to keep you on the dance floor. Floatier but still packing power-pop punch is the track Audrey, with reggae-like off-beats keeping 80s rock angst-ridden vocals upbeat.

A spot of crowd-surfing broke out towards the end of the set, despite the small size of venue, with the crowd happily keeping the lone surfer afloat as confetti rained down from the stage above.

hey so you may have seen these posters round town.. we did the shoot AGES ago as a bit of a piss take at the juiced up wankers roaming our streets late at night.. anyways, since then, theres been a spell of violent occurances in our inner suburbs. we hate violent wankers and the poster is merely a criticism on them.. so.. we were very amused when some old lady was running round town tearing down all our posters put up through melbourne.. playing at vineyard in st kilda, the venue laughed their ass off when the lady came in abusing them for having us play.. so as a joke, they posted this little sticker.. enjoy.

From the moment they started playing, Red Ink’s lead singer was jumping around as if on an invisible pogo stick, ensuring their set was high in energy and enthusiasm. First song Antidote set the tone for a high voltage set that had the crowd moving. The lead singer was asking the crowd to dance with him and he was setting a hell of an example up on stage, using the whole space to jump, spin and generally use his body to rock out.

Kleptomaniac was a crowd favourite, moving between a guitar riff that forced your feet to stomp out the beat and a chorus that was like a cool drink of water when you needed it. The lead singer was swigging not from the obligatory bottle of beer, but a bottle of water. This was a smart move as his dedication to dance up a storm on stage meant he was sure to be in need of some serious thirst quenching. He joked that he chipped his tooth as a result of this exertion and could feel bits of it floating around in his mouth, an anecdote that was received with amused appreciation from the audience.

Next the claws were out for Werewolf. Cold Outside was dedicated to the ladies in the room, but not any particular one according to the lead singer. This song was the only one for which he stayed relatively still and he invited the men in the room to take advantage of the loving mood. A Young Lovers band member played as a guest in one song and joked that the microphone Red Ink’s lead singer had been using tasted delicious. The last two songs Going Insane and Audrey were delivered with just as much enthusiasm as the first song and when they thanked the crowd at the end I felt like someone should have thanked them back as it truly was an impressive performance both musically and physically.

Anyway, Red Ink bounded forth a short while later and my night finally looked up. To say that this is one of Melbourne’s hottest unsinged bands is an understatement, and I am yet to leave a show of theirs disappointed. There is a genuineness to their pop-rock that is wholly endearing; unlike the previous band, no pretensions whatsoever can be detected. Lead singer John Jakubenko bounces around the stage without a hint of self-consciousness, his tenor range soaring all the while. With all his entertaining movements and emotive top notes, Jakubenko is surely is one of the more accomplished performers I’ve seen for less than fifty dollars. If I had but one minor complaint, it would be that I’d like to see his hands away from the synthesizer more often, leaving him free to move. A minor concern though. As a unit, Red Ink look truly comfortable and cohesive as they deliver their set with the right mix of precision and looseness. The band’s newer songs are less hook-oriented and slightly more challenging, giving their set, which is otherwise full of ever-so-catchy tunes like Love on a Park Bench and An Elaborate Plan to Run Away, a fuller, more complete feel. Watching the lads simply enjoy putting on a show is something that makes it near impossible for the audience to have anything less than a memorable experience at a Red Ink show. This surely is one band to keep your eyes on.

So alot of you my already know, but as of tomorrow, we are heading back into the studio with Tom Larkin (Shihad, Young & Restless, Getaway Plan etc).. We are spending the next 4 days recording the tracks for our upcoming EP release to go to air Feb 09.. 2 of the tracks will be Audrey and Going Insane with more to be announced.. We are particularly stoked about these tracks and know you will be too. For those at the Christmas Party, you will have already heard these tracks.. For the rest of you, get excited. haha

We will pop up pics/video diaries over the next few days of our time in the studio.. It's very very exciting. For now, i leave you with a little collage of some of our cooler moments over the last year..

Well hello world... Welcome to the official RED INK BLOG...

For those of you who are not yet aware of the RED INK epidemic, ill briefly outline below..

We, RED INK, are a 4 piece indie band based in Melbourne's sunny Mornington Peninsula.. With addictive songs and overwhelmingly vibrant live shows, we have began to attract the attention of both idustry figure-heads and live music-goers alike..

This blog is set up to inform the above mentioned on what's happening in the life of RED INK.. We will aim to post weekly with info highlighting the best in gigs, recording, pics etc... All thing RED INK..
